I am so happy to share one of my favorite yarnies with you all. If you follow Inner Hooker on facebook you have heard me sing my love for Debra from Winding the Skein. She is UH-MAZING!

Check out this thick and thin! This yarn seems to be so popular these days and can you see why?!?! Beautiful!

these locks and corespun are to die for!! Oh what I would do for some of those gorgeous locks!

Not only is Debra extremely talented her family is also involved!

Her 14 year old son Jonathan sells the wooden buttons on her sites.

The wood is from her parent's farm that was homesteaded by her great grandfather! Her mother was born in the old farmhouse and still lives there! Isn't that pretty neat. I love the history. Jonathan's grandpa helps him cut the buttons and then he sands and drills the holes. I have a few of these buttons and they are truly a work of art. So when you buy wood buttons you are helping Jonathan save for his dream camera to continue pursuing his photography and videography.

Debra's other son Gabriel is 12 and makes and sells PVC Niddy Noddys.

I don't have much first hand use with them since I still haven't pulled out my wheel to learn to spin but they are a great tool for spinners or even if you recycle yarn. Head over to Winding the Skein to read more about how Gabriel makes these and what makes his so great!

I love supporting handmade and this family is the picture of it! Everyone working together to do the best they can for their family. I wish I could put into words just how amazing Debra is. We are not extremely close but we have chatted online for the last year or so and as silly as it is to say I totally look up to her. She is the kind of woman and mom I hope to continue to grow to be.

{EEK! Yes I know this is 4 days late!! This is what I get for procrastinating. Sunday night I thought to myself "I will get up and do it first thing Monday while having my coffee... only to wake up and have no internet....for days! 1. I was cooking and like 10 minutes in I could not figure out why it was taking so long to heat up. I forgot to turn the stove on. DUH I did this again 2 days later with the oven.

2. I started a diet last week. Today is day 6, I feel fine but I am frustrated I am not losing faster.

Housewife Wednesday

We are four days (not even a full 4) into January and I still haven't typed up my resolutions to post here. Sigh. Maybe that's a sign that I may actually keep them this year?? I am determined to make a few changes and set totally realistic goals so here's to hoping and trying!

One area I am determined to improve in is my housewife skills. I hate cleaning. I am a clutter keeper. I move my piles around, I do binge clean but it never lasts long. I have to figure something out that works better for me. I stumbled upon a blog called A Slob Comes Clean. A woman after my own heart! Seriously if I didn't know better I would have thought I wrote it! I spent a few evenings reading her blog and was totally inspired to become a reformed slob. I am nowhere near reformed. In fact I have done good the last 2 days because apparently even though they were my resolutions I needed to procrastinate on them the first few days of the year.

In hopes of sticking to this I am going to do my best to check in every Wednesday and fess up for the week before. Hopefully more cheering myself on than fessing but I'll be honest about how the weeks goes. Promise!

Sunday: housewife fail. Not completely but I didn't do my chores at all. I picked up and I cooked dinner so all is not lost right?

Monday: Success! Morning and night chores done, and I cooked! Go me!

Tuesday: Success! Morning and night chores done AND I even cooked dinner! yep, TWO days in a row!

I am hoping to keep this up this week while also purging rooms along the way. One of my biggest problems is that nothing seems to really have "its" place. Things just sort of get stuck somewhere or piled up. I need to find homes for things or get rid of them. I also need to add more and think I'll do it by day like Monday: bathrooms Tuesday: Entry, etc... so each room is getting cleaned well regularly.

Clearly this is a whole new world to me. Don't judge ;)

Tell it all Tuesday is making it's blog debut! TIAT was started many months ago on my Inner Hooker facebook page. It instantly was a hit! Lots of confessions, some silly, some serious. It was very clear that we all needed to share something from time to time. Even those that don't share say they read the confessions and find some solidarity, people that feel just like they do! Once the "stalker feed" was released on facebook (the constant feed on the right that tells everyone, everything) some people were apprehensive to share for fear of their family and friends seeing. I have loved TIAT and hope that it continues to have a decent following on facebook but I also want everyone to have a safe space to share. Here it is! I will post a blog weekly for sharing. You can leave a comment here and no stalker feed to pick it up and tell! You can sign in as yourself, or share anonymously. You don't even have to have a blog.

Just a friendly reminder: PLAY NICE! We are all doing the best we can in this life we should support each other instead of judging or bullying.

Holiday Gift Exchange, my favorite purse, and a new pattern

A few months ago I saw this purse on Pinterest.

It was love at first sight. Truly I dreamt about this purse! I could not get it out of my mind! Of course it was one of those pins that link to the blog in general and not the post that the actual picture is in {why do people do that!?!?}. I spent a few nights scouring the blog for this picture and finally found it BUT there no explanation of where it was from or anything! I decided to email the blog owner....yes, I told you I was obsessed. In fact at this point in the hunt I am pretty sure I had convinced myself that I actually NEEDED the purse to continue on with my life. I emailed her begging and pleading her to share where she got it. No luck. She found the picture on google and had no clue where it came from :( {thank you nice blog lady for at least emailing me back!}

Sigh...being the ~~crazy obsessed~~ resourceful woman I am I knew what had to happen. I had to make it myself! Insert a few months of getting sidetracked, other projects and patterns pushing this one further down my to-make list.

November came and with it Linda from Craftaholics Anonymous and her semi-annual gift exchange! I signed up a little nervous but ready. In true Scotti fashion I waited until the very last week to get serious. I was totally at a loss for ideas. I hadn't had much time to chat with my partner and didn't get a really good feel for her. I knew a few things, we are both busy ladies, have 3 kids, she enjoyed photography, sewing, cooking, etc... and is in school. So needless to say she dabbles in it all. More thinking...more stressing....more wondering why I torture myself like this...AND THEN IT HIT ME. My favorite purse would be perfect!

A few late nights and I did it!! I was so excited and really wanted to keep it for myself but I did wrap her up and send her new home in Washington! I hope she is loved!

Now to make one for myself! I am holding out until I can buy some single ply handspun. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Side note: do you think I could buy some fabulous shoes as a business expense to recreate the original picture?

I am so in love with this faux knit look! If you haven't checked out the hat do so! It's one of my new favorite 2 day hair hats :) I really need to get some legit pictures because my dim, sort of out of focus, on my forced daughter pictures just don't do this little baby justice.

One of my prototypes came out ~~wrong~~, less than perfect. {which is the point of prototypes isn't it?} Anyways....immediately I saw it. I must stuff a newborn in this hat and make it a cocoon. Brilliant right? ok, maybe more resourceful than brilliant. Or maybe I just like newborns stuffed in things.

Halloween

Growing up we rarely did Halloween. I guess there was a 3 or 4 year streak that we dressed up and maybe trick or treated (maybe...I can't really remember). My mom was never a fan of Halloween and always told us it was evil so we'd head off to the store and buy whatever candy we wanted!! Then we'd go to the movie theater. We always seemed happy with it. I honestly don't ever remember feeling like we were missing out anything.

Now that I am an adult I totally get where my mom was coming from! I just don't love Halloween. AT ALL. I think it's just sort of a waste. That being said, I do love seeing the kids all dressed up, I could just forgo the treating. Since the boys are so little and the girl is so big we only hit about 5 house on our street this year. Sawyer would have been perfectly happy with the big bowl of candy we had at home. I could barely drag him away from it to go out. Not wanting to spend a small fortune on Chinese made crap we decided to go the handmade route again this year...and why not?!?! Ummm hello they are so much cuter!! I will enjoy dressing them what I want while I can! Sawyer went as Clark Kent/Superman (idea via Pinterest). I should have probably tried the outfit on ahead of time so I would have known just how big those glasses would be. Oops. Dex went as a cow....the cutest cow you've ever seen! Best part. Cute boys in costumes I made from stuff we had! Cha-ching!Sawyer figured out how to walk to the door and hold out his bucket but never once said trick or treat or thank you. Sigh...maybe next year. He did knock, ring the bell and proceed to walk right into someone's house though! Dex hung back in the stroller since his walking skills weren't quite mastered well enough to not risk biffing it. All in all a successful year celebrating the "evil holiday"!

Confession: I have had a serious case of the blahs. I usually have so many ideas my hands won't work fast enough. Since just before summer I just sort of got burned out. I had ideas but couldn't force myself to actually put them out. Months ago Ciara Hammonds Photography (one of my dearest friends) asked me to make circus themed hats. 6 months later I finally did it. Soooo sorry I took so long Ciara! You know I love you! That being said I think I am back in the groove! Now to wrap up all of these half finished things :)

Freezer Cooking Round 3

Freezer Cooking Round 3

First up Steak Chili from Buns In My Oven. When I made this it was tasty. It was SPICY! I love, love hot, it was good for me but way too hot for the kids. I also think simmering for 3 hours was too much or perhaps I just stirred it too much because mine looks more like shredded meat and not cube chunks. Gross looking? yes. Tasty? yes. Day 2 in the fridge this resembled dog food. I really think I just cooked it longer than needed. Perhaps my meat was more tender. Anyways. I will make this again but won't cook as long.

Confession: I am not a fan of corn. Gasp! I know it's so anti American. Yeah I can eat it but it's not my favorite. This soup was pretty good though! Chris loves corn so I made this more for him but how can you go wrong with bacon on top of almost anything? This soup is a great freezer meal. I added a little more milk when reheating but Chris said it was just as good if not better so thumbs up!

Next up, Buffalo Chicken Rolls from Can You Stay for Dinner.

I thought these were pretty tasty. I hate bleu cheese so I left it out but I do think next time maybe I'll add some feta or something. They freeze well and do the trick when it comes to wanting a quick snack or lunch. I froze these uncooked and just baked as I wanted them.

Next....Chicken and Gnocchi soup from My Favorite Recipes. This recipe was recommended from someone on my Inner Hooker page. {Thanks Donna!}

This is supposed to be an Olive Garden replica. I have never tested OG's before so I am not sure but I thought this soup was amazing! Creamy and garlic-y, truly just perfect. It does use a lot of half and half (fatty, fat, fat...seriously, someone stopped me the other day to tell me Dex was a fat boy! Then proceeded with "fatty, fat, fat! Man I love me a fat boy"...ok, so I was at Walmart and maybe shouldn't be surprised but I really didn't know what to say! PS he isn't even fat! Now fatty, fat, fat is a joke in my house) (back to the half and half is fattening justification here) but I tried to remember that one of the recipes made 2 dinners worth for my family of 5 so I guess if I broke it down it's not totally terrible. Better than a happy meal right? Truly this was my favorite recipe of this group. This soup freezes well but I thought the gnocchi got too soggy so in the future I'll either cook less or I'll freeze without them in it and just cook them and add when we reheat the soup. They don't take long to cook at all.

Recipe #5, Alfredo Sauce from Utah Deal Diva.

I just made the alfredo, not the recipe that is after and uses the alfredo. That may be key here. I just thought this was ok. It was very cream cheesy. If you have tried those new Philadelphia Cooking Cream Cheeses, it tastes like that...in alfredo flavor (do they even have that?) I mixed half with penne pasta (cooked the noodles about half way so they wouldn't be soggy) and froze the other half.

Last up... another recipe that was just ehh to me but could be my fault...stick with me.

I love the idea of these but they just didn't work for me. I greased my pan and they still stuck like crazy!!! Like I couldn't get them out of the pan in one piece stuck. I may have thrown out the pan but don't tell my husband! I may try them again in maybe a silicone pan or freeze them in the pan and try to pop them out that way. The boys love eggs for breakfast so this would be a nice break for me some days. For now I'll stick to scrambling but am not writing these little guys off just yet.

Week 6 and Week 7

Welcome to week 6 and week 7

Week 6:

we did a quick poll on Inner Hooker and most everyone voted for a catch up week last week. Now, did you use it to catch up? I did hook some but still not enough! I am having a hard time wanting to hook these days. All I want to do is work on house projects {can't wait to share some of these with you} but I really, really need to get back on the ~~yarn~~ ball.

So to catch up with where we are....or more likely where we should be. If you are doing rounds, you should have 88 of them completed through round 4. If you are doing whole grannies I would guess you'd want to be at least half way through them and ready to press on hard these next few weeks! I originally had this set up for 8-9 weeks but we are about 3 weeks behind (sick baby, a catch up week, plus 2 half goal weeks) so we are looking at closer to 10-12 weeks I would guess. Still not bad!

Week 7:

This week's goal....KEEP WORKING HARD. I know a lot of people are feeling behind or maybe a little bored, but once you are done you will be so happy! Other people's pictures are totally motivating to me so stop over at the sites and check some out, share yours as well {yes, even if you are behind!}

Now, let's get busy.

Option 1: work all grannies through Round 5

Option 2: work 88 rounds total

Option 3: make 12 squares

Option 2 may seem a little different. Up until this point most people have been changing colors every round. Round 5 or 6 on most people are sticking to the same color so it only makes sense to work that granny all the way through as opposed to breaking the yarn each round. If you are changing colors each round all the way through that's great too you can do 1 or 2 whatever you'd like! This is your afghan!

You may also want to measure your grannies each round from here on. We want them 6" so you may not need all of the rounds. Assuming you checked your gauge you probably know how many rounds you'll need. Knowing most people don't check you may want to measure....no biggie if they are too big or too small, your blanket will just be a different size. Also if you haven't been crocheting over your tails, and/or weaving them in, now would be a good time to start working on those.

Freezer Cooking Take 2

Freezer Cooking Round 2!!

Back again with a few more tried and true freezer meals! I am really enjoying this style of cooking and know I appreciate when someone has actually frozen and then cooked and eaten the recipe. Some things just don't save as well as others. Luckily, so far I have had great success with the recipes I have chosen. Here's my last batch. They've been frozen for a few weeks, prepared, and enjoyed!

First up, Chicken Pot Pie.

This is actually my recipe. I was freezer cooking before I even knew there was such a thing! My family LOVES this meal. I use pre-made pie crusts but you could make it from scratch if that floats your boat. I prepare the filling, I get 3-4 pies depending on how closely I follow the recipe vs. doing it from memory. I make one that night and freeze the other fillings in a ziploc. Put the ziploc in the fridge the day you will use it, I warm it up in a pot and usually need to add a little milk (it gets thicker in the freezer). While thats warming I cook the bottom pie crust a little to keep from getting soggy, dump in the filling, second crust and cook! Yum, yum, yum.

Next up, Pioneer Woman's Dr. Pepper Pork.

This was also delish. The meat was a little fattier than I thought but once it cooled I just scraped it off and tossed it. We ate this with tortillas, guacamole and salsa.

Third....I used the PW Dr. Pepper Pork for filling for tamales.

This was only the second time I have made tamales. They are pretty time consuming but really tasty. I love that when I make them myself I can control the amount of meat vs. masa. Not like those parking lots tamalas that are mostly masa with a tiny it of meat! I use this recipe/tutorial for tamales. These are also something I have frozen many times and they keep great.

and lastly I also made breakfast burritos. I didn't snap a picture but they were a huge hit.

I hope this inspires you to give freezer cooking a try! So far so good here! I made more today, I'll be back in a few weeks with a follow up on them!

East Texas Fair 2011

Outrageous prices, fried food, filthy rides, does it get any better than the fair? As I get older I realize the fair is really only fun when you are tall enough to ride all the rides and not a parent. As a parent it's moderately stressful and includes A LOT of standing around and wrestling a certain 2 year old that has no clue what standing in a line until it's his turn means.

So with a freebie week did you catch up? did you slack? I wish I could say I got all the way caught up but like I said I did a lot of baby holding! I am close to caught up and after this week (another half assignment) I have high hopes I'll be caught up.

Crochet Along Week 3

Woo Hoo!

We survived the first 2 weeks! Is anyone caught up?? So far we have made approximately 4,224 stitches!!! That isn’t even counting the individual stitches in the puffs and clusters! If we counted the 5ish stitches in each it would be around 15,500! That is a whole lot of hooking! Honestly, I think I may have set our goals a little high but it has definitely kept us all working hard on it. I think most people are behind and we had a lot of new people join us this week so I think we will have a slightly easier goal for week 3. If you are on track or just an over achiever feel free to keep moving at this pace you’ll just be ahead a little!

Week 2

One week down! How did you do?? Did you meet the goal?? Work beyond or perhaps you have a little catching up to do?? I have about 40 more round 2's to go but will finish them tomorrow. I actually am typing this at 1:30am so I guess it would be today not tomorrow.

My line up! I plan on doing color through round 3 or 4 (probably 4) and then the last round and joining with a creamy ivory color.

Crochet Along Week 1

Welcome to the FIRST (but hopefully not the last) Crochet Along!!!

I am so super excited to get started on this! We are going to start and complete an adult size afghan (approximately 50" by 70", 88 grannies total, 8 squares x 11 squares) in 8-10 weeks. Hefty goal? Maybe! We will take it a week at a time and adjust if we need to! This will put us completing this early November! Just in time for things to get crazy for the holidays. Perhaps this could be one of your handmade gifts!

I’d love for you to invite your friends and family to join along as well! If you are participating and have a blog feel free to take a button! You may also want to follow me on facebook! I will check in with you all throughout the week to see how things are progressing (too slow/too fast, etc).

I am so happy you are joining me on this. Please know this is my first time hosting a crochet along and my first granny square afghan. We may hit a few bumps along the way but I look forward to this being good! Now, let’s grab a beverage, sit down and get started {you can pretend we are all chatting in cozy chairs at some totally groovy coffee shop, I totally am!}

I prefer to work my grannies in more of an assembly line. You can choose to do them however you’d like but I’ll be doing mine a one round per week. You may prefer to do your grannies start to finish, one at a time (you’ll need to complete about 11-12 a week) {sidenote: I love working them in groups so I have a handful at some stage or another {truly for no other reason than they look pretty all stacked up!} but being my first time it was confusing to figure a good schedule and keeping the week’s work pretty even throughout. Maybe the next one we’ll do this way! Again, if you prefer you could do it this way.} Bottom line you want your granny to grow a round a week so if you want to do half your group at a time you’ll work 44 grannies and do twice as many rounds per week and start over with your next group of grannies half way through. Confused yet??? I shouldn’t type my thoughts out loud ~~I confuse myself~~!

Back to what I was saying…we will do one round per week. The first week we are going to work through Round 2 on as many as possible. Whatever we don’t finish will carry over to week 2 and so on. This predictable schedule makes it easy enough to catch up if you fall behind on a busy week or go ahead if you have more time one week than another. We will check in once a week, if you blog I'll post an area here to link up. If not we can post on Flikr, Facebook or whatever idea you may have. Let me know your thoughts on this.

Week 1:

Download the pattern. Gather your supplies. Before getting started I recommend making 1 granny from start to finish. Check your gauge! {trust me on this, I have no clue what I was thinking and checked it after about 40 circles...yeah WAY TOO TINY} The finished granny also serves as a good reference for color changes and such.

You are going to need yarn….lots of yarn! You may choose to use all stash yarn or go out and buy all coordinating or your colors of choice. If I have done my math right (and I like to think I have) this project will take just under 3,000 yards…YES INSANE RIGHT!?!? NOT including the yarn for joining {because I honestly have no clue how much that will take}. My practice granny took about 35 yards.

Week 1: make 88 grannies through Round 2

Week 2: work all through Round 3

Week 3: work all through Round 4

Week 4: work all through Round 5

Week 5: work all through Round 6

Week 6: work all through Round 7

Week 7: Round 8 & 9 dependent on size
Weeks 8-9: finish any squares not complete and join

I have been totally obsessed with grannies lately! No, not real grannies though I do love old people. Granny squares, it seems they are everywhere I look! Maybe they are popular again? Maybe I notice them because I am obsessed with them? Either way I have been attempting to convince myself to start and can’t seem to take the leap…sort of like starting a diet. I decided to see if anyone else would be interested in joining along. Each week or 2 weeks (we can vote on how often) we will have an assignment or goal then we will check in with each other and post pictures and all that good stuff. You know…hold each other accountable and actually finish this project!

Freezer Cooking Take 1

“What’s for dinner”

oh lawdy do I hate this question!! It makes me feel like a crazy ready to rage woman. Enter freezer cooking. In an effort to avoid this internal meltdown and have better odds of my children surviving into adulthood I thought I would give this notion a go. There are some seriously hard core people out there that literally cook once a month and make/prep most of their meals. Well, I’ll never be that girl but I wouldn’t mind having 2 dozen or so meals prepped in the freezer.

There are countless websites, blogs, and cookbooks dedicated to this. I just want to share a few recipes that are tried and true. It’s a little nerve wracking making things that you don’t know how they’ll save and taste later! I knew I should start small just in case it wasn’t my thing we hadn’t invested too much time or money into it! I chose to make 2-3 meals of 3 different dinners. At this point I have used these frozen meals and they all passed the test! Well, one wasn’t a favorite here only because Chris hates tomatoes….oops {I knew he hated them but thought they were small enough he wouldn’t mind. Next time I will throw them in the food processor along with the onion and bell peppers I hid in this dish}

My meatloaf recipe. Do not cook ahead or mix the sauce. Do that as you would when cooking. I prepped it all and put it in a disposable pan to freeze. Eventually I think I’d like pyrex for them all. I also saw something were they lined the pan with saran wrap, froze it solid and then took it out and put it in a bag. Takes up much less space in the freezer and budget friendly. Maybe I’ll try this next time!

Baked Ziti from Annie’s Eats. I did cook the turkey ahead and I also cooked the noodles a little more than half done. This one I prepped all the way to the cooking stage and froze (again in disposable pans) instead of baked. This one is awesome!

Creole Jambalaya from Keeping Life Creative. Cooked the chicken and the sausage. Cooked the rice about halfway. I also put the veggies in the food processor in hopes of hiding it from the kids. This dish turned out to be a little too spicy for them anyways. I thought it was delish but considering I was the only one that ate it , it won’t make it into rotation. I do have another frozen bag of it I guess I’ll be eating alone. I poured this into 2 large Ziploc freezer bags and layed perfectly flat to freeze. Once they were frozen solid I could stand them up and they took up next to no room. Loved it.

I also put one large pack of chicken in the crock pot and shredded that into separate bags to freeze. Sliced another one into fajita strips, poured in the marinade and froze. We typically have shredded meat in the freeze. When I make it for dinner I am sure to make enough extra for another meal...we love shredded meats! They are so easy to cook and tasty! Plus you can use them for lots of things! My go to recipe is this one from Make It and Love It.

We’ve made it dozens and dozens of times always perfect!

That's about it! Wish I had tons more to share but like I said, these are ones that I have not only frozen but already tasted after the big freeze. I'll keep you posted on more. If you are feeling even a teensy bit tempted I really recommend trying a few meals! It has made a few of my evenings much easier not to mention saving time and money!

Well, I have the Target version

(LOVES them, too bad they are sitting in the yard with dog poop on them...need to go spray them off...maybe later)

Since then I have seen a few flip flop makeovers and thought they were pretty cute and clever. Me being the hooker that I am I NEEDED a yarn version.

Behold! The granny triangle flip flop diy {yeah, that's a mouthful}

I used an I hook (5.50mm) and cotton worsted weight yarn. Feel free to use whatever you'd like!

We bought 3 pairs of Old Navy cheapies for about $8 they do have dollar day but it's crazy. My daughter got the "high end" ones...you know the ones that are $3 weird toxic rubber instead of $2 weird toxic foam :)

Let's get started.

Make a magic circle.

Ch 3 (counts as your first dc) and 2 dc in the magic circle, ch 2 (sorry chain 2 not pictured)

(dc, dc, dc, ch 2)—repeat twice. You should now have 3 groups of 3 dc, join to the top of your starting chain.

{2 groups}

your piece should resemble this {3 groups}

Optional color change

Ch 3, 2 dc in the chain space just before your chain (the last chain space of the previous round), ch 2,

In the next chain space make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2

{sorry ch 2 not pictured...again ;) }

In final chain space you should have 1 group of 3dc already. You are going to make 3 dc, ch 2, and then join into the starting chain. You now have 6 groups of 3 dc

Optional color change

Ch 3, 2dc in the chain space just under/behind your chain, ch 2

3dc, ch 2 in next space –this space is the center of one of the sides of your triangle

3dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 2 in next chain space—this space is a corner of your triangle

3dc, ch 2 in next space –this space is the center of one of the sides of your triangle

3dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 2 in next chain space—this space is a corner of your triangle

3dc, ch 2 in next space –this space is the center of one of the sides of your triangle

You are now at the end, your space should have your very first group of dc, make 3 more, ch 2 and join to beginning chain.

Fasten off, weave in all tails

I pulled a few strands of yarn through, you could braid them or finish some other way but I thought it looked fine just loose.

Cut your plastic straps off. You can use your straps as a size gauge or try them on. Pull your yarn through and knot. Don't pull your yarn knot tight until you've got a good fit. Do this on all 3.

Squeeze some hot glue in the hole and let dry well. I also sort of wrap/stuff the extra yarn in the hole. You want it smooth with the bottom or close so that it doesn't feel like you are walking on bumps :)

Did you know I have a FAQ page?? It's nothing magically or fancy (maybe someday) but I do like to think it's helpful! For the most part I send people there for yarn shop recommendations but there are a few other topics there. Just wanted to let you know in case you've never checked it out before! Have other questions?? Just let me know, maybe they'll be added to the page!

Where do I get my yarn?

For the majority of my patterns I try to use a yarn that is good quality, washes and wears well, and is readily available. My favorite acrylic is Vanna's Choice, it's soft and readily available in most hobby stores. I also will occasionally use I Love This Yarn (Hobby Lobby) but I have to check my gauge because it crochets a bit smaller for me. As for delicious hand spuns...well, I am not completely committed to only one supplier, but I do tend to stick with a few and order from others from time to time. I mean really, there are so many amazing fiber artists out there with so many delicious yarn choices I can't commit! You can find tons on Etsy, Ravelry, ArtFire as well as on .com sites. When looking I typically search with words such as 'handpun', ‘thick thin’, ‘thick and thin hand spun’, ‘hand spun merino’ etc... I am totally obsessed with 2 ply worsted or dk weight hand spun right now as well!

Remember Google is your friend. Search it, you’ll find a ton.

The main shops I order from regularly are:

Dee of HeartstringsbyDee, Ny of ilashdesigns, Shannon of Grand Vally Fibers, and Lynn from FuzzyFibers. These women are incredibly sweet and supportive. Fortunately for them (and a little unfortunately for me) they are all very busy and tend to sell their stuff sometimes before it even makes it to their shops. If I am shopping from Dee or Ny I always search their sold orders and luckily for me both women are typically happy to spin more of something I want. Fuzzy Fibers really doesn't do custom orders and uploads a few times a month. Her upload date is in her shop announcement...get there on time, her stuff sells fast! I do prefer hers for the flower bonnet petals though. Ny and I have also worked together and she has it down as well! It really comes down to the project and your preference. You can't go wrong with any of these ladies! HeartstringsbyDee and Ilashdesigns also posts their stuff on facebook so if you want to be ahead of the game follow Ny here on facebook and follow Dee on facebook! For the clown I have purchased from Shannon at Grand Valley Fiber they also have a facebook page. This is the only place I have purchased yarn for the clown hat so far.

I have tried a few others and been happy as well. I do tend to only order one my first time to be sure that I like the product without a huge investment. Nothing worse than buying a ton of yarn only to get it and have it be smaller weight than you thought or to smell like smoke or other stinky stuff!

{Sidenote: I have not received any perks from these shops I just love their stuff and like to have shops to send you all too! That being said I have no problem accepting free yarn in return for my opinion shared here :) soooo if you want to send me some feel free}

How do you get professional pictures??

Photographers.

In my opinion photos are the second most important thing to selling well, only behind selling a good product. How do I get professional photos? A lot of people will have a different answer or recommendation. My best advice is to do what works best for YOU. What works best for me or for someone else may not be best for your shop.

1.) Trade: I think this is the most common way people get photos, it is also the most common way to get screwed over. You send off the item to a photographer in exchange for a few photos of the item. Typically this is a straight trade, item for photos, no money. Typically these photos will be watermarked.

2.) Photographer discount: offer items at a discounted price in exchange for final photos. A lot of people will discount a % or the complete price after receipt of the photos. This is probably the safest route as far as not sending an item out and never receiving pictures but you’d have to find a photographer willing to pay up front.

3.) Pay for a shoot. Don’t have your own models? Ask your photographer if they know anyone? Ask friends and family members if they know anyone that would be willing to model. I have even posted on facebook looking for a particular age/look. If you are paying full price for a shoot be sure you have a decent amount of items you want shot at the shoot. I would not expect these photos to be watermarked since you are paying like any other customer but you'd have to check with your photographer as this is likely considered a commercial shoot.

Talk to your family photographer, they may be a great match for you. Look on Craigslist or other community forums. Typically (but not always), these are people just starting out, building their portfolio, etc... and more likely to be willing to work with you or even strike a deal. Be sure to always check their work before contacting or committing to someone. They may email you asking to trade, you’re excited and race to the post office only to see their work later and not like it at all! In today’s world so many people think they are photographers and may not be to that level yet. The first time I work with a new photographer I would only send 1-2 items the first exchange. Again, you want to be sure you like their work and that you actually get pictures back and in a timely manner.

The main photographer I work with is Ciara Hammonds of Ciara Hammonds Photography. She is awesome to work with and has become a great friend to me. How did you find selling success?

Hard work. No seriously, a lot of blood, sweat, tears, sleepless nights, sacrifice and money went into getting my business to where it is. My family has been very patient with me. I started IH when I was working full time and had a new baby. I had little to zero knowledge about selling online.

Do I know everything? NO

Do I fail? YES

For the most part I have had to learn as I have went along. Google is my friend and should become your friend too. The internet is an amazing tool and can truly provide you with almost anything you are looking for.

Gypsy Summer I

Vaca so far….Arizona Edition

Yeah, yeah, I promised myself I would blog throughout this vacation so that it would actually get blogged unlike last years, which is still on my ‘to blog’ list. Well 3 weeks in and no blog yet. I suck, I suck but here it is! Vacation 2011 Arizona Edition; or maybe it should be Arizona Edition part 1 since I will be back again and I am sure will have more pictures. Either way, let’s get started!

We left Thursday June 23 around 1am hoping to get as much driving in with the kids sleeping as possible. I thought the idea was a bit crazy but have to admit my husband was right and it worked out great. The kids slept for the most part until about 8 am! There were a few short wake ups and a few feeding stops but overall it went great!

We stopped in a small town for breakfast and to stretch our legs and back on the road! Pit stop in El Paso for lunch…McDonalds…mmmm, ok they have a playplace and no matter how dirty they are they got the kids to burn some energy off even though it was 100 degrees out and the playplace was outdoors.

We loaded the red faced littles back in the truck and it was make or break time. If we were getting a hotel El Paso was a good stopping point. It was still really early in the day so we pressed on. Shocking still the kids did great…until just outside of Tucson. Things got a little rough from this point on but being just a few hours from our destination we toughed it out, took a few extra breaks, listened to Sawyer scream and did just about anything to attempt to entertain him.

21 hours after leaving our driveway we pulled into my in-laws. It was a very long drive but awesome to be there by dinner! We did a lot of visiting with Chris’s family and my sister and a few friends. It was been so wonderful to see everyone. Pictures to come soon :)

Bringing back the Wanna Make it Wednesday!

I haven’t been reading blogs much (since Dex has entered my world) but since I have been on vacation and had other people playing with my kids I have had a little more time to pleasure read. I found a few awesome things that I am going to share with you…~~so I can find them on my blog to-do list later~~ because I am nice and share well with others.

First up…I am so totally 100% in love with this project! Not so much the making of it because I’ll be honest…it looks like quite a bit of work and while the tutorial is good a novice like me would feel more comfortable if it were a little more detailed. O’well, I love it and NEED to make it! Check out the project yourself at A Happy Wanderer, which is also one of my new favorite blogs for sure! Love it!

These are also super cute! I have seen quite a few similar projects but I just had to share again. I love fabric-covered headbands! I think they are super cute and would even make a simple and fun gift. Alisa Burke shares her tutorial. Check her out she has beautiful photos and a ton of great posts.

And I am totally in love with this knock off Anthropologie purse. I am totally thinking this may find it’s way to a loved one for Christmas this year.
